You are a soul. You have a body.

I recently came across a quote by C.S. Lewis that has caught my attention, “You don’t have a soul. You are a soul. You have a body.”[1]

Lewis is one of my favorite authors, theologian and apologist. He has a way of taking very deep and theological concepts and bringing them down to a real life level of understanding. In short C.S. Lewis most often makes me think. Lewis is known for his high view of God and displaying the majesty of the Almighty in his writing, perhaps this is what draws me to his work. As I was reading I came across the above quote and found it to be a haunting statement. My first reaction to the quote was something along the lines of do we really understand the difference between spirit and soul, mind and emotion.

I later had a FaceBook conversion with a pastor friend of mine (Troy Young) who brought up this point, “if the soul is the mind, emotions and will (distinguishing animals and humans from plants) wouldn’t it be fair to say you HAVE a soul…and plants DON’T have a soul. As well as a soul, humans have a spirit…distinguishing them from animals.” As I thought about this I came to the conclusion the point here is that the material things of this world are not what are important in light of eternity.

Examples would include our failing bodies, decaying possessions…etc, although, it is these things of the world that many of us place the highest value. When in reality it is the Spirit or Soul that lives on eternally. The reality of this truth is what I think is the “haunting” part. There are two options and only two in light of this reality.

Either our SOUL lives on in Glory with its creator or is cast away and separated from God eternally which is an eternal punishment. Therefore as I wrestle with the gravity of Lewis’s quote we better have a clear view of what is truly important in this life and of utmost value before I leave this life and enter eternity. Otherwise the consequences for our actions may indeed be a life wasted chasing after the wrong TREASURE. So what is your treasure? What captures you? Is it the treasures of this world or The Treasure of eternal life found only in Jesus Christ.[2]
